How to Use Image Compressor & Converter
- Upload Your Image
Drag and drop a JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or SVG image into the upload area, or click to browse and select an image from your device. - Choose Output Format
Select Keep Original Format, JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or SVG from the output format menu. This lets you compress the image or convert it to another supported format. - Adjust Compression Quality
Use the Quality slider to choose your preferred balance between image quality and file size. You can also select a compression level such as Balanced, High Compression, or Maximum Compression. - Compress or Convert
Click Compress Image to reduce the file size, or click Convert Image to convert the image to your selected format. - Preview the Result
Compare the original and processed images. The tool displays the format, file size, dimensions, and the amount of space saved. - Download Your Image
When you’re satisfied with the result, click Download Image to save the compressed or converted image to your device. - Process Another Image
Click Reset to clear the current image and start again with a new file.
Privacy: All image processing happens directly in your browser. Your images are not uploaded to a server.
Limitations
- Browser Processing: Very large images may require significant browser memory and processing time.
- GIF Animation: Animated GIFs cannot be reliably re-encoded using standard browser APIs. GIF-to-GIF processing preserves the original GIF, while converting GIF to another format processes a single frame.
- PNG Compression: PNG uses lossless browser encoding, so the file-size reduction may be smaller than JPEG or WebP compression.
- JPEG Transparency: JPEG does not support transparency. Transparent areas are converted to a white background when saving as JPEG.
- SVG Conversion: Converting SVG to JPEG, PNG, or WebP rasterizes the vector image, so it will no longer remain infinitely scalable.
- SVG Optimization: SVG optimization may remove unnecessary whitespace and comments but does not guarantee a smaller file in every case.
- Browser Compatibility: Results and supported encoding features can vary depending on the browser and device.
- No Guaranteed Size Reduction: Some images are already highly optimized, so compressing them may result in little reduction—or occasionally a larger output file.
Privacy First: All image processing happens directly in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
Supported Format Conversion
The tool supports conversion between the following image formats:
| Input Format | Supported Output Formats |
|---|---|
| JPEG / JPG | JPEG, PNG, WebP |
| PNG | JPEG, PNG, WebP |
| WebP | JPEG, PNG, WebP |
| GIF | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF* |
| SVG | SVG, JPEG, PNG, WebP |
GIF limitation: When converting an animated GIF to JPEG, PNG, or WebP, the browser processes the image as a static image rather than preserving the full animation. GIF-to-GIF keeps the original GIF file.
SVG limitation: Converting SVG to JPEG, PNG, or WebP rasterizes the vector image. The resulting file is no longer an infinitely scalable SVG.
Note: The Keep Original Format option allows you to compress the image without intentionally changing its format.
GIF Output Behavior
- GIF → GIF: The original GIF file is preserved. This is important for animated GIFs because standard browser image APIs cannot reliably re-encode and preserve GIF animation.
- Animated GIF → JPEG: The output becomes a static JPEG and does not retain animation.
- Animated GIF → PNG: The output becomes a static PNG and does not retain animation.
- Animated GIF → WebP: The output is generated as a static WebP and does not retain the original GIF animation.
- GIF → GIF compression: The current browser-based tool does not re-encode animated GIFs, so it does not provide true frame-by-frame GIF compression.
In short: GIF animation is preserved only when the original GIF is kept as a GIF. Converting an animated GIF to JPEG, PNG, or WebP produces a static image.
